Phoenix Immaculate Heart of Mary Statue

Our Statue

On December 23, 1994: On this cold rainy day The World Apostolate of Fatima received a call from the Phoenix airport that the statue we had purchased from Fatima, Portugal, had arrived. When customs opened the box to check it out. They exclaimed, "How beautiful." After paying the duty tax for her, she set out to visit the parishes in this diocese. Her first visit was on May 13, 1995 at St. Germaine Church in Prescott Valley. By late 2004 she has visited 38 parishes in the Phoenix diocese.

This 4 foot statue was sculpt of wood by Thedim, the nephew of Jose Thedim, who had scuplt the original "Queen of the World" in 1920. He fashioned the statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary the way Mary had appeared to Lucia on Dec. 10, 1925. The Virgin Mary appeared to Lucia with the Child Jesus by Her side, elevated on a cloud of light. Our Lady rested one hand on Lucia's shoulder, while on the other hand She held a heart surrounded with sharp thorns. At the same time the Child Jesus spoke: "Have pity on the heart of your Most Holy Mother. It is covered with the thorns with which ungrateful men pierce at every moment, and there is no one to remove them with an act of reparation." Many are drawn to attend Our Lady's parish visitations. Some come back to church, some come for the first time, others have their faith deepened. Conversions & graces follow her whereever she goes.

History of the original "Queen of the World" Statue

Filled with bitterness for reasons known only to himself, a wealthy Portuguese man named Gilberto went to Fatima on May 13, 1920--just three years following the first apparition. His pilgrimage plans did not include prayers like the intentions of most of the pilgrims. He went there with the intention of throwing bombs at the pilgrims he would find praying there. Heaven, however, intervened, and Gilberto returned to his home converted.

In thanksgiving for the peace he now felt within himself through this conversion, he hired the most widely acclaimed sculptor in Portugal, Jose Thedim, to carve a statue in the likeness of the vision of Our Lady seen by the three children.

It is this original statue of Our Lady of Fatima that was crowned by Pope Pius XII, through a Cardinal Legate, on May 13, 1946, giving Her the title of "Queen of the World." It is reserved in the little chapel at the Cova da Iria and is carried in procession on the 13th of each month from May to October. The first Bishop of Fatima had the same sculptor carve a copy of the original under the supervision of Lucia. On May 13, 1947, while a Youth Congress was being held at Fatima, a resolution was passed to have a statue like the original one at the Cova carried throughout Europe and into Russia. Lucia suggested the Bishop give his statue for this purpose and that it be known as the "Pilgrim Virgin."
